The short version
Free during the beta
No payment and no account. If CopyKat ever costs money, you’ll hear about it first.
Beta means rough edges
Things can break or change. Don’t make CopyKat the only place you keep anything important.
Your content is yours
What you copy stays on your Mac. We claim no rights to it and never see it.
Play fair
Don’t resell, tamper with, or abuse CopyKat or the website.
01Agreeing to these terms
By downloading, installing or using CopyKat, joining the beta or its waitlist, or using copykat.xyz, you agree to these terms and to our Privacy Policy.
CopyKat is an independent project (“CopyKat”, “we” or “us”). If you don’t agree to these terms, please don’t use CopyKat. If you use it for an organisation, you confirm you’re allowed to accept these terms on its behalf.
You need to be at least 18, or have a parent’s or guardian’s permission, to use CopyKat.
02The open beta
CopyKat is in open beta: free, early and still changing.
- Beta access is free. Mac beta seats are limited (100 for now), and once they’re taken you can join the waitlist.
- Windows, Android and iOS versions aren’t available yet. Joining their waitlist doesn’t promise a release date.
- We may change, add or remove features, or reset or end the beta, at any time.
- We’ll never charge you for the beta. If CopyKat moves to paid plans later, we’ll tell you before anything changes.
03Your licence to use CopyKat
We give you a free, personal licence to install and use CopyKat on Macs you own or control.
The licence is non-exclusive, non-transferable and revocable, and it lasts as long as you follow these terms. CopyKat includes open-source components that come with their own licences (such as MIT, Apache 2.0 and the SIL Open Font Licence), and nothing here limits your rights under them.
Everything else about CopyKat, including the app, the website, the name, the cat logo and our designs, belongs to us. These terms don’t give you any rights to them beyond this licence.
04Using CopyKat fairly
Use CopyKat for yourself, and play fair with it and with the website.
Please don’t:
- Sell, rent or redistribute CopyKat, or share modified or repackaged builds of it.
- Reverse engineer, decompile or tamper with the app, except where the law allows it despite this rule.
- Use CopyKat to break the law, or to copy and paste content you don’t have the right to use.
- Misuse the website: sign up with someone else’s email, automate signups, take more than your share of beta seats, or try to disrupt or break into our systems.
- Post spam, abuse or other people’s personal information on our feedback board.
05Your content
Whatever you copy with CopyKat is yours. It stays on your Mac, and we never see it.
You’re responsible for what you capture and paste, including having the right to use it. CopyKat doesn’t filter out passwords or other sensitive data yet, so be thoughtful about what you keep in slots and pins. Our Privacy Policy explains how to clear it.
06Installing beta builds
Beta builds run on Apple Silicon Macs with macOS 12 or later, and they aren’t notarized by Apple yet.
- Because the builds aren’t notarized, macOS warns you the first time you open CopyKat, and you’ll need to confirm it (for example with “Open Anyway” in System Settings). Only do this for copies downloaded from copykat.xyz or our official releases page on GitHub (opens in a new tab). We’re not responsible for copies from anywhere else.
- CopyKat needs the Accessibility permission to work. After an update, macOS may ask you to grant it again.
- Keep your Mac and your important data backed up. Beta software can misbehave.
07How CopyKat works with your clipboard
To copy and paste for you, CopyKat briefly takes over your clipboard and keyboard. Here’s what that means in practice.
- When you capture, CopyKat presses ⌘C for you and saves what arrives. The copied selection also stays on your clipboard.
- When you paste from a slot, CopyKat puts the item on your clipboard, presses ⌘V, then restores what was there before.
- For up to 2.5 seconds after a trigger, your next slot key or Esc goes to CopyKat instead of the app you’re typing in.
- Some apps handle simulated key presses differently, so a capture or paste can occasionally fail. If a paste doesn’t go through, the item stays on your clipboard so you can paste it yourself.
08Feedback
We’d love to hear what you think on our feedback board at copykat.userjot.com (opens in a new tab).
If you share ideas or suggestions, we may use them to improve CopyKat without owing you anything for them. Using the feedback board also means agreeing to UserJot’s terms.
09Other services
Parts of CopyKat rely on other companies’ services, which have their own terms.
Downloads come from GitHub, the website runs on Vercel, beta signups are stored with Supabase, and the feedback board runs on UserJot. We’re not responsible for how those services work, and your use of them is also governed by their terms.
10No warranty
CopyKat is beta software, provided “as is” and “as available”.
To the fullest extent the law allows, we make no promises that CopyKat will be error-free, uninterrupted, secure or right for your needs, and we disclaim all implied warranties, including merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose and non-infringement.
Slots and history can be lost, for example after a bug, a reset or an update. Keep your own copy of anything that matters.
11Limitation of liability
If something goes wrong, our responsibility is limited.
To the fullest extent the law allows, CopyKat won’t be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive damages, or for lost data, content, profits or business, arising from your use of, or inability to use, CopyKat or the website.
Our total liability for any claim is limited to the greater of what you paid us for CopyKat in the 12 months before the claim (nothing, during the free beta) or ₹5,000. Nothing in these terms limits liability that can’t be limited by law.
12Ending your use
You can stop using CopyKat at any time. We can end your access if you break these terms.
To stop, quit and delete the app (our Privacy Policy explains how to remove its data), and ask us to delete your beta email if you like. We may suspend or end your beta access, or stop offering downloads, if you break these terms or when the beta ends.
Parts of these terms that should naturally last, such as ownership, the warranty disclaimer, the limitation of liability and governing law, still apply after your use ends.
13Changes to these terms
We may update these terms as CopyKat grows.
When we do, we’ll change the date at the top of this page. For significant changes, we’ll also give notice on the website, or by email to beta members, before they take effect. If you keep using CopyKat after that, you accept the updated terms.
14Governing law and disputes
These terms are governed by the laws of India.
If a dispute comes up, please reach out through our feedback board first, and we’ll try to sort it out informally. If we can’t, the dispute will be decided by the competent courts in India.
If you use CopyKat as a consumer outside India, you keep any protections your local law gives you that can’t be waived.
15The fine print
A few last details that keep these terms working.
- If any part of these terms can’t be enforced, the rest still applies.
- If we don’t enforce a term straight away, we haven’t given up the right to enforce it later.
- You can’t transfer these terms to anyone else. We may transfer them if CopyKat changes hands, and we’ll tell you if that happens.
- These terms and our Privacy Policy are the whole agreement between you and CopyKat about the beta.
